Six to ten extras (male, female, children, etc, they just walk through the town square throughout the play; you can of course have as many as you desire, just not too crowded or distractive)

Note: You can use your dance ministry, if you so desire to dance on some of the songs instead of the choir singing.

Narrator:  (lights out or dim, spotlight only on narrator. Should be spoken dramatically.) For years, Israel waited on the promised King who would come. They held on to every prophecy, reciting them to the next generation. Hope was on the way. Justice was coming. The King of kings was coming to live in the hearts of man. The only question was when. Where is this savior? Where is the King? (brief pause) Some still searched for the King, while others had begun to believe it was not going to happen. Just as we today sometimes allow our faith to waver in the midst of trails and seemingly dead silence from heaven, Barnabas, our main character, oppressed by the government, had allowed his faith to diminish and seemingly had given up on believing the King would come to execute justice and righteousness and to bring peace.

 SCENE I, ACT 1

DRUMMER BOY: (running with a small drum that he is beating) The King is born! The King is born! (exits)

JESSE: What did he say?

ANDREW: Something about a king being born.

BARNABAS:  I know he better not let Herod hear him.

JESSE: Did he say a king or the king?

BARNABAS: The king.

JESSE: Can it be true?

BARNABAS: What?

JESSE: Don’t you remember what the prophet Jeremiah said, "Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.” (brief pause) Today is that day.  I must go and prepare (stands and runs to exit out).

ANDREW: What’s his problem?

BARNABAS: I don’t know; he’s always been so dramatic. But I’m telling you nothing good can come out of this. They are just going to stir King Herod up. You know how paranoid he is.

Scene 1, ACT 2

(Same setting, Barnabas and Andrew are still sitting in the town square. They have a sandwich or some type of food before them; it can be a piece of fruit (no potato chips or name brand bags, etc))

BARNABAS & ANDREW: (takes a bite of their food. Barnabas looks up and see the shepherds hurrying through the town)

BARNABAS: Hey, what’s the big hurry?

SHEPHERD 1: We have come to see the Savior.

BARNABAS: (looks at Andrew, giving him a puzzled look and then looks at the Shepherds again) The Savior?

SHEPHERD 2: The Savior.

Scene 1, ACT 3

(Excerpts Only --- Copyrighted material, all rights reserved)

ABIGAIL: (pointing to the men) Barnabas (walks toward the men; looks at Beulah as they approach the men) I told you they would be here.

BEULAH: Andrew, why are you all sitting here? Haven’t you heard?

ANDREW: Heard what?

BEULAH: It is being told throughout the city that the King has been born.

BARNABAS: What has gotten into everyone? We have been waiting for centuries and nothing. People claiming to know where the Savior is. I tell you nothing but trouble will come out of this.

ANDREW: Barnabas, why do you keep saying that? What kind of trouble?

BARNABAS: Any king that promises to bring justice and righteousness is a threat and King Herod will not allow it to happen.

ANDREW: But they are not talking about any king. They are talking about the King. They are talking about the Savior. Aren’t you just a little bit curious? (pointing his finger towards Barnabas) We should have followed the shepherds ourselves.

ABIGAIL: What shepherds? (sitting next to Barnabas)

Scene 1, ACT 4

ABIGAIL: The King is born. You know, people are still talking about it. What do you think Beulah?

BEULAH: I just don’t see a king being in a stall… (frowning) where they feed cattle. I just do not believe it.

WISE MEN: (walking through the town square, bearing gifts)

ABIGAIL: (nodding her head in the direction of the Wise Men) Look.

BARNABAS: Hey, Magi, where are you all going?

WISE MAN 1: (they walk closer to where Barnabas and the others are sitting) We seek he who has been born king of the Jews, for we have seen his star in the East. King Herod told us he was here.

WISE MAN 2: We have come to worship him.

BARNABAS: You have traveled all this way just because you saw some star? And you were crazy enough to have gone to see King Herod inquiring about another king? (brief pause) This has gotten out of hand.
